Sashiko Moment & Process - Sound of Itokiri |
Itokiri - as a step to start a Sashiko Journey (and to complete the Sashiko stitching) - is an important process in Sashiko Stitching. It isn’t always necessary. However, I want everyone to be able to do so with proper understanding. Here, I share the whole process with filtering some uncomfortable noise & focusing on the clear snipping sound. I hope you enjoy the process with “Sashiko Sound”.

So interesting! I think Sashiko stitching is so beautiful ! I would prefer to hand-stitch something that I planned to keep and enjoy. If I wanted to make strong rags, I think I'd use a sewing machine for them. I have some old 100% cotton bed sheets. Does anyone have an idea how to repurpose them?
This is sharper easier to use then normal scissors
Thank you 🌷
I think it must be difficult to maintain the dignity of the "stitchers" who had no other option than to repair their garments and bedding out of necessity as opposed to it being a recreational hobby as we do today to be "on trend". What we may choose to do as an income-making "art form", we must not forget how and why this stitching process began, the original roots of it's beginning.
Is there a reason you transfer the pattern onto the back side of the fabric rather than the front side? I find it more difficult to stitch on the back side.
Would you say boro ~ rags?

thanks for another great video I've just done your online course at domestic , really enjoyed it :)
2024.. I love it. Thanks for the details and perspectives that you shared. Good shit right here.
Thanks for the introduction class. I am brazilian and english is not my First linguage.
Thank you for sharing the message of stories and the lives who lived and worked with Sashiko & Boro.
Hi! I'm portugueses so sorry my English. Thanks you very much for hour wonderful explanation. You became easy a knowledgement that seem so hard to understand. Wish you luck, peace and health🍀🤞❤️
I started learning it because I saw a lot of people calling crafts inspired by sashiko and boro that really had nothing to do with them and I didn't like that. I decided that I wanted to actually learn about it. I accidentally chose a very difficult sashiko kit to start with, but I'm getting used to the materials. I have a great deal of respect for people who can do this well. I'm trying to learn proper terms, but may not be able to ever read Japanese because of a neurological problem.
This is lovely and please keep going. Im the kind of person that if i choose to learn a technique that is from another culture. I want to learn FROM those people! The techniques. The stories, the history etc! My friend had a thrift store and one of her employee's is from ukrayne and does the most beautiful beadwork and i would pay to sit and learn from her even though she barely speaks any english! Just to learn from seeing and doing <3.
I found out of shashiko through buying a vintage wrangler denim jeans.
So ASMR. Beautiful to watch, and how satisfying to see such a work on the very last finishing touches. Not that your cultural insights or tutorials would be less. All of this is very calming, interesting, and worth delving into.
Thank you for watching!
I really like this video. It’s fun to watch and hear each thread tail be clipped. It’s also wonderful to enjoy the stitches and colors of this beautiful piece while it is spread flat on the work table.
Im glad you enjoyed it!
You are wearing Western-influenced clothing and with a Western-influenced haircut. You wear glasses which were invented in Italy. Stop "stealing" from other cultures then whining that people steal from your birth heritage. Appropriation goes both ways, there are no exceptions which can be made about your worn "borrowed trends" when you are the one preaching about cultural appropriation. Stop playing gatekeeper, no one asked you to.
I noticed my sashiko thread has a tendency to open out, now I understand the sashiko stitch as almost adding another warp and weft thread to the base fabric which is what strengthens it over time.
Thank you, BEAUTIFUL
“The process of stitching and caring for someone is called sashiko. And the result of sashiko is boro. “ Thank you for sharing.
So enjoyed you visit to my craft room. I really like learning the history of stitches from all over the world. Thanks for sharing …I hope to follow you as you show how to stitch.
have you come across any books about stitching sashiko that have been translated into english. I have found several on amazon but will they be worth buying? When I begin a new craft I like to have a book to reference and make notes. I've been watching videos and listening to the stories.
No, I haven't come across anhy books that can speak on my behalf. There are good books published in Japanese... but they aren't translated into English. Sashiko Books written in English aren't wrong, but I do not recommend them as they can be misleading. They simplify Sashiko quite much. To answer the questions I often receive for recommendation, I made the Online Course on Domestika. I understand that you would like to have a book, but please consider the course as my recommendation. www.domestika.org/en/courses/4952-introduction-to-japanese-sashiko-stitching/sashikostory
most of all the Blue color is basic of sashiko fabric, is that have any philosophy in that color
Yes!
Thanks for sharing your stories while stitching, It's very inspiring

Thank you for relating your view of cultural appropriation with such patience and inclusivity. I don't know many of the stories behind sashiko but from what I have read the technique was born out of practicality and thrift, using what you have and making it work as a necessity of life. It's like not seeing why our grandmothers darned so many socks! (There was a depression on and no one had the $ to buy/knit new socks just because of a hole, everyone had to make do the best they could, Asmuch as I love needlework I've never learned how to do darning despite inheriting 3 wooden darning eggs, I was initially attracted to sashiko stitching by it's seemingly simple but clean designs that had such an eye-catching result. I'm very willing to explore the culture that produced it. i have no interest in appropriating anyone's culture. Sometimes when a something becomes "trendy" it make one appreciate that culture and become more interested in learning how it came about. I see it opening more doors than closing them. We're all learning everyday, even if we don't realize it. thanks for your eye-opening take on the cultual aspect, I really didn't know that I might be stepping on any cultural toes when I became interested in this fascinating style ofstitchery. I refer to it as "Japanese embroidery" rather than any xxx-inspired term. . Thanks again, I'm enjoying your channel very much.
Thank you for your time to watch the video carefully. I wouldn't need to make this type of video if everyone is mindful on what they do like you are. I appreciate your perspective, and I agree 100%. It is so interesting to see one comment like this - and completely opposite comment saying what I share is non-sense... Interesting. Thank you!!
Thank You!
I'm always interested in the stories you tell. I really enjoy doing Sashiko stitching while listening to your stories. I think I'll be able to enjoy Sashiko stitching as long as you and your Sashiko friends are around. And I hope to spread that kind of fun circle(輪) and harmony(和). Thank you so much, Atsushi-san.
Thank you, Lilly. The "Circle", a group of people sitting around & stitching, is one of the original scenary of Sashiko... and I am glad that we are replicating it via Internet. The same message goes to the "Wa" - as long as there is "Wa", I will keep sharing the stories! Thank you!
Yes, the goal is the journey, not the destination. Thank you, as I knit this sock, I can imagine the texture of your stitches. You always get the like button, because you are you.
Thank you. The Destination can be the goal - but today's trend is ignoring the fun part of its journey. Those who teach probably haven't done the journey, yet they teach others how beautiful it is. I appreciate you watching it!
It brought a bit of a smile to my face when you mentioned how Japanese people say: "I'm sorry" left, right, and center. It's a bit like that in Sweden where I come from, only there it's: "Tack!" or "Tack så mycket" meaning "Thanks," "thank you," or "thank you very much!" left, right, and center. Despite being in Canada 41 years, this habit of constantly saying: "Thank you" stays with me and is impossible to erase 🙂
I think it was the old way of learning for many cultures. We were not to speak unless spoken to, which stopped many questions. When we watched long enough we would learn and then maybe ask a question. The old way worked. Thank you so much for sharing your culture. We are all so similar but have beautiful differences ❤
Every 👏🏼Single👏🏼Industry👏🏼 (art, fashion, architecture, etc) needs to start asking themselves *”What exactly was it that inspired u? And more importantly, did u make an effort to understand its true nature before using it for ur own gain?”* Too many ppl see something esthetically beautiful & think simply giving voice to their ‘source of inspo’ absolves of all responsibility to educate in an effort to prevent the harm perpetuation of CA causes. Our easy world access means even large corporations frequently use values from an ENTIRE CULTURE for their own gain (money, power, or attention) & expect a ‘creative commons’ argument to suffice when criticized.
I appreciate your message of ”What exactly was it that inspired u? And more importantly, did u make an effort to understand its true nature before using it for ur own gain?”. I completely agree with that. It is not appropriate or not. It is a matter of how to approach. It can happen to any form of culture & practice. I appreciate your comment here & I can continue thanks to those who read/listen to what I am writing/saying instead of what they think I am writing/saying.
Please continue to tell stories your English is perfect and your energy is infectious thank you for sharing your talent and culture with the world … 💙from Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦🙏🏼
Thank you!
Ive been using sashiko to repair my husbands favorite pair of nike sweatpants for a while now. At first i tried darning, but it quickly became clear this wasn't an effective way to repair knit jersey, since the edges of my darning would cause new holes. i only have a few minutes each morning to work on them, but with sashiko I can do the running stitch first, then the cross stitch the next morning. I love hunting for scraps of fabric and asking him what piece hed like me to use. I bought a scrap with a bunch of birds printed on it, and i let him choose the bird he liked best. I imagine japanese wives consulting their husbands on design questions like this too 🥰. When i see a new hole or thin patch forming i get a little excited to add another patch.
I just found out about sashiko recently and looking up videos about it had surprisingly little info about the history/ origin of the technique so glad I found your video thank you
I notice that I put too much stitching into the patch stitching around the knee and may have to adjust it later :(
I came here because I opened it wrong and got all kinds of knotty. I tried for longer than I’m comfortable saying and wanted to die. I had to split it in reasonable lengths and I’m doing what I can with the pieces now lol
It makes me very happy to see so many artisans bringing traditional ways into the light. This is not a glitch, this is their purpose. Sure, there are easier, faster, and cheaper ways to do things, but there is no comparison to the way of those carrying on the traditional way.
i learned about Sashiko from your videos a few years ago and am glad i did. there will always be a need for skill that is true to history or gives well researched information . those that are interested will find you.
Beautiful
